Mince pies, charity, and seasonal knitwear...
Well done to everyone at RDT who selflessly wore their daftest and most crazy Christmas attire to the office today to raise money for the Kent Surrey and Sussex air ambulance. We don’t know exactly how much we raised because it went into a sealed container, however our best guesstimate is £200.

A big thank you to everyone who donated and to all those who ditched their normal gear in favour of some pretty daft festive knitwear.

Merry Christmas everyone, and here's to a great 2016!

The Marketing Landscape

Marketing Campaign Management module for RDT's Landscape
The Landscape campaign management tool is an independent, web-based module integrated with RDT's Landscape. It provides functionality to create the complete campaign hierarchy, from the marketing plan all the way down to the incentives, for a specific scheme. The incentives within a campaign can range from premium discounts at a scheme or cover section level to discount vouchers or gifts.

marketing-words

The campaign setup allows marketing managers to track start and end dates for campaigns, and capture their expected sales targets and costs. This information can be assessed against the actual revenue generated through policy sales as a result of the campaign. MI can be generated to track and monitor campaign activity, campaign GWP sales income, and campaign costs.

Marketing managers can associate incentives to campaigns. Incentives are associated both to a scheme in Landscape and to a campaign. The campaign code is captured against the policy in Landscape and the associated incentive information gets pulled through from the campaign management module. If the incentive is to do with premium discounts, the incentive code will be passed to the rating engine. The incentive discount information will show up in the premium breakdown section in Landscape.

Another important feature is workflow tasks that can be set up to generate relevant tasks when policies with specific campaign or incentive codes are activated. For example, a trigger task for discount voucher to be sent to the introducer when a “member get member” policy is activated. This module gives marketing teams complete control and visibility on campaign performance, tracking against marketing budgets, sales figures and costs.

Ciaran Rowe - Business Analyst
Before RDT I spent 28 years in the treasury and capital markets space, working for three multi-national banks. My background is in financial operations – I started on the bottom rung straight from school and worked my way up the ladder to management. Most of my career was spent in the City, however managing global teams I got to travel to Europe and Asia. The constant changes in the industry led me down the project management/business analysis road.

Record claims pay outs despite underinsurance for household cover...
British insurers are paying out a record-breaking average of £77million in claims every day, according to the Insurance Times and the ABI.

An article published in the Insurance Times on September 24 features a revealing breakdown of successful claims that shows how, for example, more was paid out for pet insurance claims than for travel policies.

Cash

Meanwhile other press coverage shows that there is a big problem with underinsurance among UK home owners. An average of £8.2million is paid out every day for domestic claims – however nearly a quarter of UK households do not have contents insurance, while it is estimated that 20 per cent of those who are insured have inadequate cover.

How can the insurance industry improve consumers’ confidence in their products and help them understand the value of properly protecting themselves and their property?

Telematic For The People

Oct 28th, 2015

View our website

Advances in telematics continue apace
Telematics can be used for a number of applications within the insurance industry, such as vehicle tracking and satellite navigation systems, both of which have been widely used for years. More recently however telematics have been used in the insurance sector to measure and record the way a car is driven. The information recorded can show how careful a driver is, which can be used to affect their insurance premium.

Car-side

One of our clients that uses telematics is DCL, who have a scheme to install cameras and telematics devices into fleet vehicles. In the event of an incident, the video from the on-board cameras can be sent directly to DCL’s claim department so that they can quickly identify liability. Sensitive accelerometers can identify if an incident has occurred, and drivers also have an option to manually register a collision to ensure that the relevant information is sent.

It is interesting to see what use other insurers make of telematics. A recent article in Insurance Times discusses how Admiral has details of a customer’s driving behaviour transmitted back to them. Within minutes of a collision they will know the customer’s speed, location, direction of impact, as well as any acceleration or braking during the incident. By combining this with Google’s virtual mapping service the accident can be reconstructed by the insurer.

What do consumers want from their telematics policies?
A US consumer study into usage-based motor insurance has revealed how a telematics app for smartphones could change motor insurance and improve road safety. In the UK, usage based insurance (UBI) is uncommon. The study’s key finding could still have implications for the market here. In the study, motorists were given the choice between a UBI policy with a discounted premium or with a ‘safe driving’ scheme that came with a telematics app for their smartphone.

Smartphone-Car

More drivers opted for the phone app, which measured and scored their driving behaviour and provided feedback, enabling them to improve their score. The vast majority of these motorists became deeply invested in the app and in the notion of “beating” their own score – and therefore on continual improvement.

David Lukens, LexisNexis Risk Solutions Telematics Director, said: “Offering a premium discount is becoming less attractive to drivers and less sustainable to insurers. Consumers are looking to measure themselves and connect with others across all aspects of their lives, and driving is proving to be no different. The benefit to society is the idea that we can all improve our driving and be safer on the roadways.”

Most of the study’s subjects (77 per cent) said they would continue to monitor their driving, regardless of how well or badly the app scored them, which suggests that the safe driving concept may have the potential to change driver behaviour.

Edward Bonham – Senior Engineer
This month, we asked our senior 'Customer Service Team' engineer to talk about his 'issue resolution' role within RDT, and his agricultural connection...

"I wasn’t always a programmer. Through my early career I worked in horticulture; firstly as a grower of ornamental trees and hops, and then as a researcher into the branching in fruit trees.

office-words

"All the time though I was learning how to manage data, from payroll information to experiment results, in computerised form. This led to the decision to use these skills more, so I joined Lloyds of London as a developer. For the years I was there, I learnt a lot about the insurance market as well as how to produce quality software, including some business-critical, internationally used web sites. So when I was looking for a new challenge, RDT seemed an obvious choice.

"Since joining RDT I’ve continued to learn about both the insurance industry and the production of the highest quality software. Landscape is an interesting system to work on, as it handles the intricacies of insurance along with connectivity to external systems. It utilises a good selection of technologies to fulfil its customers’ needs, which is always interesting for a developer.

Agile-lunch

"I’ve recently been working on some diverse areas, from accounting calculations to document generation involving third-party software, to workflow processing. And all of this in a relaxed and friendly office!"

Mandy Williams – Product Owner
We asked our 'credit hire' product owner to talk about how her career led her to RDT, what her role here entails, and what makes her tick...

"Before I came to RDT I worked at various insurance companies including Brit Insurance, Direct Line and Rebus.

office-words

"I joined RDT almost six years ago as a project manager but moved into a business analyst role after a year. I was immediately sent to Australia to gather requirements for replacing RAA’s green screen insurance solution with Landscape. This had many challenges – not just to implement a number of personal lines products, but to understand Australia’s complex tax rules and language differences.

"Once RAA had gone live I spent time with numerous customers gathering requirements for new projects and small changes.

"Two years ago I ventured into the Agile world in the role of product owner. I love this role as it combines my project management and business analysis skills. My first “product” was RAA’s road service product. This was a massive undertaking involving four agile teams and in hindsight probably not the easiest first product. There were four phases, with the content of each managed and agreed with RAA at every step. All phases were delivered on time and within budget which I was very proud of.

Agile-lunch

"A much smaller project followed – converting an existing household book into Landscape. Since then, I have been working on RDT’s credit hire project. I am working with an Agile team to incrementally build this product as a web based application. This has been a challenging project with lots of unknowns and new technology, but I am thoroughly enjoying it."

What is the role of a Scrum Master?
Agile-Wall

We have already talked about the role of the product owner, who plays an important part in the scrum team by defining what the team works on. The role of scrum master is just as important, as they facilitate production and delivery. The scrum master is often thought of as the team’s coach, encouraging and motivating team members to do the best work they can, at the same time ensuring that everybody works within the rules of Agile principles and practices.

The scrum master does everything in his or her power to enable the team to perform at their highest level while maintaining delivery and quality. This involves removing any impediments to progress, reducing wasteful activities, facilitating meetings and working with the product owner to ensure the product backlog is in good shape and ready for the next sprint.

As well as working with and for their team, the scrum master is continually searching for ways to improve and refine processes. Improvements they come up with are adopted by other teams to help optimise the entire value chain.

The product owner, along with the account manager, also manages their team’s relationship with our clients, ensuring they are kept up to date with progress and are informed of any issues or risks that could impact a delivery.

Agile-Wall

There is no individual in the scrum team environment who manages everyone. The team works collaboratively, self-organises around the work presented and is collectively accountable for all of its output. We will look at the team itself in another post.

Ian Gull - DBA
We asked one of our excellent DBAs to talk about how his career led him to RDT, what his role here entails, and what makes him tick...

RJ45

"Hello, my name is Ian Gull and I am a database administrator (DBA) at RDT. I joined RDT in 2007 and have seen the company grow from 24 members of staff to about 100. I’ve also seen significant changes to the way the company is structured and managed, including a major office move. At the time I joined, the role of a dedicated DBA was new here. But by late 2012 RDT had two of us, and we’re now part of a broader platform engineering team.

"Prior to joining RDT the majority of my career was spent in the City of London, working for a variety of financial institutions including small stockbroking firms, large multi-national banks and the Lloyds underwriting market. Apart from a couple of years as a developer at the start of my career, I’ve always been a DBA, working on a variety of database platforms including Oracle, Sybase, DB2 and SQL Server. Probably not what you’d expect for somebody with a degree in physics and astrophysics…

"My role at RDT is varied, but focused on Microsoft’s SQL Server platform. The work changes considerably from day to day and can include providing support to RDT’s development and QA testing teams, giving technical support and advice to RDT’s customers, getting involved in development projects as required, running specific DBA-only projects, maintenance of RDT’s SQL Server environments, and providing the database input into the build and release processes. The variety means that the job is never dull – a definite bonus.

RJ45

"Some of the projects I have been involved with include a handful of data migration projects where new clients taking RDT’s Landscape product had a requirement to migrate data out of their legacy systems into the Landscape database, a significant reworking of RDT’s MI solution to improve its resilience, and performance and involvement in the upgrade of RDT’s hardware and SQL Server environments. Currently I’m involved in a significant project to implement continuous integration (CI) processes across both application and database development.

"Of all the things I do I find the project work the most fulfilling, especially data migration projects that involve significant contact with equivalent technical contacts at RDT’s customers."

Self-Driving Cars
We have found a few interesting articles related to self-driving cars and how this might affect the insurance industry...

Firstly, these articles from Insurance Innovation Reporter and the Insurance Journal both discuss Google's self-driving car project, the later focusing on the ethical issues behind this technology.

Herbie

Secondly, this Lloyds of London article focuses on how understanding the issues of liability will be key for insurers, and that whoever cracks this first will have an edge in the insurance industry.

What effect do you foresee self-driving cars having on your business? Do you believe that there be a decrease in road traffic accidents, or will drivers get complacent when ‘not’ driving and stop paying attention to other hazards?

Increasing creativity through workplace experience

Want to Be More Creative? Lose the Tie
This article on workplace experience really resonated with us here at RDT, as the dress code at RDT’s office is ‘casual’. Many of the RDT family have previously worked for large insurance companies in London, where the dress code is ‘business suits’, so many are really surprised by RDT’s stance on what is acceptable to wear in the workplace.

It can take a while to get used to the dress code at RDT, but any new member of staff will soon come to realise that it does make a positive impact when they are able to dress in clothes they feel comfortable in.

Casual

It removes barriers when the receptionist is frequently more smartly dressed than the CEO, and the directors and the developers are all in jeans. And, as Sir Richard suggested, it increases the creativity of our staff – it’s certainly a factor in making this a lovely place to work.

RDT’s dress code is just one way the company demonstrates how much it values its staff and how focused it is on innovation and creativity.

What is the role of a Product Owner?
Most of our delivery teams have about seven members, including developers, testers, a scrum master, a business analyst and a product owner. We keep our teams small as we have found it is better for effective collaboration and communication, and keeps the quality of work high.

The product owner is responsible for what gets delivered to the customer and the overall product vision. It is their job to understand the product strategy, current market trends and what our customers want.

Agile-Post

Working with the business analysts, the product owner shapes the work the team does by defining who the end user is, what the problem is that needs solving, and the value to the customer of creating and delivering a solution.

The product owner, along with the account manager, also manages their team’s relationship with our clients, ensuring they are kept up to date with progress and are informed of any issues or risks that could impact a delivery.

The product owner will work very closely with the team’s scrum master, who is responsible for how the work is delivered. We will examine the scrum master’s role next month.

Congratulations RDT apprentices ...
As part of RDT’s commitment to supporting young local tech talent and to support our strategy of growing organically we are really pleased to be able to congratulate Anthony Wilson and Jack Greenhalgh on passing their final exams.

Anthony and Jack joined RDT in May last year and embarked on an apprenticeship programme supported by QA. The course is a combination of on the job learning and classroom based teaching, both scored highly in their exams and completed the course well ahead of the expected completion date. They are now working on personal and technical objectives around being completely integrated within the RDT team structure for their second year with the company.

Office

The aim of the programme at RDT is to develop young people with potential to enable them to work and learn at the same time. Previous success stories include Adam Page (an Apprentice who joined us in 2011) who has recently been working with the Technical director on refactoring and is now working with the livewire team on a client project and Ida Tucker & Sohail Nasir who joined us as graduates in 2013 and 2011 respectively; both working closely with clients.

As a forward looking technology company, this investment in talent and innovation is a key element of our business approach. We are constantly on the lookout for people who believe they can make a real contribution to pushing our solutions into the future and maintaining our well-earned reputation for innovation and excellence. We especially value team players who take pride in their craftsmanship, pay attention to detail, and can be relied upon to go the extra mile when there’s a big deadline looming. Andy Gill - Business Analyst
I came to work for RDT last July as a business analyst in their client services team. I’d spent the previous six years in a similar role at AXA’s motor claims division, but I wanted to work for a smaller company with a more personal touch.

I began my career as an apprentice car mechanic and have never left the motor sector! My second job was at the Motor Insurance Repair Research centre at Thatcham in Berkshire, where I performed a few roles. One was as a photographer, taking pictures of cars that had been deliberately crashed into concrete blocks to help work out repair costs and group rating information. Another was as a body shop design consultant, drawing up plans and business cases for repairers.

Office

I left the MIRRC Thatcham to head up the training division of Audatex UK, who supply motor vehicle estimating solutions. I worked there for 18 years and held a few different positions, mostly in the customer support field. I gained a lot of experience and IT knowledge there and was mostly field-based, working in the clients’ offices all round the UK.

My role at RDT allows me to use my customer support skills to help our customers get the changes they really need. The job requires a good understanding of Landscape, and after six months I feel as if I’m finally getting there. I’m looking forward to seeing how the insurance industry changes, and in particular what new products RDT will create.

Steve Knight calls time on 50-yr career

April 24, 2015

View on our website

Industry veteran says farewell to RDT and moves into semi-retirement as a consultant
Steve Knight has retired as client services director at RDT, the insurance systems specialist, closing out a career that spans nearly 50 years in insurance technology and software development.

A well-known figure in the insurance industry, Steve began his career in 1966, writing programs in Assembler on an IBM mainframe. From the 1960s up to the present day, he has filled a wide range of senior roles across the industry and his career has traced all the major developments in insurance technology.

“When I started out,” recalls Steve, “we had Hollerith plug boards and rooms full of punch girls entering data from coding pads. We’d never dream of entering our own programs – it was all batch input with no online access in those days. There were no personal computers, laptops or smart phones in the 60s and 70s, just green screens and mainframe giants that were very expensive and time-consuming to program. Nowadays we talk about straight-through processing and big data, but back then you needed a lot of kit in a large room to do very little.”

SJK

Moving through the 80s and 90s, Steve remembers the advent of Rapid Application Development, which he describes as a “forerunner of agile”, and the growth of research and development. “Without R&D,” says Steve, “a software house will eventually fail.” His experience of the industry led him to found Wasp Consulting in 1990, an insurance technology consultancy that he led for 18 years and which is still going today. He also launched the fabled Yellow Book, an A-Z of insurance admin solutions for the UK marketplace. He researched, edited and published 31 editions, and was also a frequent media commentator on technology trends. Some people may remember ‘Sting in the tail’, his long-running monthly column in Insurance Systems Bulletin.

During his time with RDT, which he joined in 2012, Steve has seen the company grow from under 50 staff to around 110 today, and he has been a key advocate of the disruptive technology that RDT is building with its insurer-hosted rating hub. “I firmly believe hubs are the way forward for the general insurance industry,” says Steve, “and could be as significant as when direct writers first entered the market. Aspects like telematics, geocoding and the MOJ Portal are important data streams but not game changing in the way that hub technology is.”

Apart from insurer-hosted rating, Steve believes that the MyLicence initiative, Flood Re and the advent of driverless cars will have far reaching effects for general insurance, while product distribution, rule manipulation and advanced analytics will be fundamental in selling insurance products across all sectors of the marketplace. He is cautiously optimistic when it comes to agile software development, seeing it as a valuable framework but one that needs careful management of costs and timeframes.

When it comes to packaged software, Steve says there is still work to be done: “When I first started offering packages, companies essentially wanted a black box solution. Then we saw a period when toolsets were offered, followed by software houses offering a starter for 10 with the rest customised. Although some or all of these variants still exist, insurers are again looking for black box-type solutions. But the issue is still integration – after all these years, plug and play is yet to arrive.”

Although stepping down from full-time work, Steve will have a continuing role as a freelance IT consultant. With a career spanning 50 years, he still has much to offer an industry that has changed dramatically since the 1960s and is now entering an era when big data and sophisticated analytics are redefining the way insurance is sold.

What does Big Data mean to your organisation?
We have all heard of Big Data. It’s the collating of large amounts of information so it can be analysed to reveal patterns or associations, with the findings being applied to a specific scenario – such as the calculation of an insurance premium.

MyLicence is a great example of Big Data working for the motor insurance industry. Using the MyLicence initiative, brokers and insurers are able to download data from the DVLA and, based on the returned information, can alter insurance premiums quoted to drivers.

Agile – Software Delivery at RDT

Agile – Software Delivery at RDT
At the heart of RDT are seven delivery teams who innovate, develop and support our products. It is important to create the right environment for them to do this and deliver value to our customers. At RDT we use a style of working called Agile to achieve this.

Agile is an umbrella term for a number of lightweight delivery methods that were put together in 2001 by a group of leading business thinkers. They created the Agile Manifesto and 12 supporting principles, which together represent the ethos we want to create in our teams.

Agile

At RDT we use the Agile practice of “scrum” for the basis of our project management framework.

This means that our teams work in two- week “sprints” to deliver high-quality software to our clients. At the beginning of each sprint we refine the requirements before planning out what needs to be done. We work together in a highly collaborative way, so it can get a little noisy! Once we have completed the sprint, we sit down with our customers to review what we have achieved, and to discuss if further changes are required. Our teams are continuously striving for improvement and come together regularly to discuss what processes or practices can be improved. We then start the two-week sprint cycle again.

There is a 30 second video which gives a visual representation of the sprint cycle here which you may find useful.
